Recently, ETHA co-founders traveled to Thailand as part of a U.S. delegation invited to witness something unprecedented: the formal rollout of Thailand’s national kratom regulations and the emergence of what may soon become the most regulated, transparent, and high-quality kratom supply chain in the world.

Why Thailand and Why Now?

For decades, most kratom entering the U.S. has come from Indonesia. While Indonesia has long been a major source, the reality is that quality, consistency, and oversight have often been hit or miss. GMP standards vary widely, farm-level traceability is limited, and regulatory enforcement has been inconsistent at best.

Thailand is different.

On August 24, 2021, kratom was officially removed from Thailand’s national narcotics list. For the first time in modern history, kratom became fully legal to grow, possess, sell, and consume within Thailand. That decision opened the door for something the kratom world had never truly seen before: a regulated, government-backed kratom industry.

Since kratom legalization took place, the Thai government has been diligently working alongside the Thailand Industrial Kratom and Trade Association (TIKTA) and other industry leaders to methodically building a framework focused on:

• Certified farming practices

• Full supply-chain traceability

• Strict Manufacturing standards (GMP)

• Domestic oversight and evolving export compliance

This certainly has not been a rush job. It’s been a multi-year process designed to do one thing well: make Thailand the premier kratom supplier in the world.

Inside ETHA’s Trip to Thailand

ETHA's recent trip wasn’t just a courtesy visit, but it was part of an official delegation from the United States invited to witness the next phase of Thailand’s kratom industry.

During our time there, the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM) unveiled comprehensive new regulations governing kratom farming. These rules outline exactly what it means to be a certified and approved kratom farm, from cultivation practices to documentation, oversight, and accountability.

Equally important, both the Thai Ministry of Justice and the Thai Ministry of Public Health made their stance crystal clear: kratom will remain legal in Thailand as long as farms and manufacturers comply with these regulations.

In other words, Thailand isn’t just allowing kratom, rather they’re protecting its future through structure and accountability.
