From Flavor Idea to Finished Product: Science Behind ETHA’s Hazelnut Shot
Creating a great flavor sounds simple. Pick something people love like, hazelnut, for example, add it to a product, taste it, and you’re done.
In reality, developing a flavor that actually tastes great in a finished botanical product is much more complicated.
At ETHA, flavor formulation is part creativity, part chemistry, and a whole lot of trial and error. Our Hazelnut Shot is a perfect example of what it takes to turn a simple idea into a finished product we’re excited to put our name on.
It Starts With an Idea
Every product begins with a question: What do we want this experience to taste and feel like?
With our Hazelnut Shot, we wanted something smooth, rich, slightly nutty, and versatile enough to enjoy on its own or incorporate into something you already love, like coffee or milk.
Sounds easy... It wasn't.
Botanical ingredients have their own naturally strong, sometimes bitter or earthy flavors. That means we aren't starting with a flavorless base. Our formulation team has to figure out how hazelnut interacts with everything already happening inside the product.
Too little flavor and the botanicals overpower it. Too much and it tastes artificial or overly sweet. Change one ingredient and suddenly another flavor becomes more noticeable.
That is where the real Research & Development (R&D) begins.
Taste. Adjust. Taste Again.
Flavor formulation usually involves repeated rounds of creating, tasting, evaluating, and modifying a formula.
A little more hazelnut.
A little less sweetness.
Maybe the aroma needs to be stronger without increasing the flavor intensity.
Perhaps the finish is too bitter.
Maybe it tastes great immediately but leaves the wrong aftertaste 30 seconds later.
Then we make another version and taste it again.
And again.
And again.
Small adjustments can make a surprisingly large difference. Our team may modify flavor concentrations, sweeteners, acidity, texture, botanical ratios, and other ingredients while carefully documenting how each change affects the finished product.
It can feel less like cooking and more like solving a very tasty science experiment.
The Lab Work Behind the Flavor
There is much more happening than simply deciding whether something "tastes good."
A finished formulation also has to remain consistent, stable, manufacturable, and compatible with the other ingredients in the product.
Our R&D process looks at things like flavor balance, ingredient interactions, solubility, consistency, aroma, sweetness, bitterness, mouthfeel, and how the flavor changes from the first sip through the finish.
And once we think we've found the right formula?
We test it again.
Because making one delicious sample in the lab is one thing. Creating a formula that can consistently produce that same experience over and over again is another.
That is the difference between an interesting experiment and a finished ETHA product.
Hazelnut Was Also Made to Experiment With
One of the things we especially like about the Hazelnut Shot is that it doesn't have to be experienced only one way.
Drink it straight, or turn it into part of your own creation at home.
Try mixing it into:
- Coffee or iced coffee
- Milk or your favorite plant-based milk
- Cold brew
- Protein shakes
- Smoothies
- Chocolate drinks
- Vanilla beverages
Hazelnut naturally pairs with coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and creamy flavors, which opens the door to a lot of experimentation.
You might discover that your favorite way to enjoy it isn't straight from the bottle at all, it might be mixed into your morning coffee.
The Finished Product Is Only the Last Step
When you finally taste a finished ETHA product, you're experiencing the end of a much longer journey.
Behind that little bottle may be dozens of experiments, ingredient adjustments, failed versions, tasting sessions, laboratory work, and tiny formula changes that most people will never see.
That's okay.
You're not supposed to taste the work.
You're just supposed to taste the result.
And when we finally take that sip and say, "That's it", that, is when we know all those rounds of R&D were worth it.
