A Beginner’s Guide to Kratom: How to Choose, Start, and Find What Works for You

A Beginner’s Guide to Kratom: How to Choose, Start, and Find What Works for You

Trying kratom for the first time can feel a little overwhelming.

Powder or tablets? Regular leaf or extract? What does a COA mean? How much should you take? And how do you know whether the company you are buying from actually takes quality seriously?

The good news is that getting started does not have to be complicated. A little education and a willingness to start slowly, can go a long way.

Here are some of the basics we think every new kratom consumer should know.

Step One: Start With the Company, Not the Product

Before deciding which kratom product to try, take a look at who made it.

Quality botanical companies should make it easy for you to understand what you are buying. Look for things like:

  • Independent laboratory testing
  • Certificates of Analysis (COAs)
  • Clear ingredient and serving information
  • Transparent labeling
  • Documented manufacturing and quality-control practices
  • GMP-focused production standards
  • A company that is actually willing to answer your questions

If you cannot figure out what is in a product, how it was tested, or who made it, that should give you a reason to keep looking.

Transparency matters.

At ETHA, we believe you should be able to learn about the plants, ingredients, testing, and processes behind the products you use, not simply take someone's word for it.

Step Two: Choose the Format That Fits You

There is no single "best" way to use kratom. Different formats work better for different people and situations.

Kratom powder is one of the simplest and most traditional options. It gives you flexibility in how much you use, but the natural botanical taste may take some getting used to.

Tablets or capsules are convenient because the amount per serving is easier to measure and there is very little taste involved. They are also easy to travel with or add to a daily routine.

Liquid products and shots can be convenient and easy to use, but potency can vary considerably between products. Always read the label carefully.

Extracts are concentrated products. Because they can contain substantially more alkaloids in a smaller amount, they deserve extra attention when it comes to serving size and labeling. More concentrated does not automatically mean "better," especially for someone just starting out.

For beginners, simplicity is usually your friend.

Step Three: Start Small

One of the most important principles with kratom is also one of the simplest:

You can always take more later. You cannot take less once you have already taken it.

Rather than starting aggressively, begin with the lowest serving recommended on the product label and see how your body responds.

Then pay attention.

How did you feel? How long did it take before you noticed anything? Was the experience what you expected? Did it feel too strong, too subtle, or just right?

Some people even keep a simple note on their phone recording the product, serving, time of day, food intake, and how they felt.

This process is sometimes called self-titration, making small, careful adjustments based on your individual response rather than assuming that someone else's serving will automatically be right for you.

Everyone is different.

Body size, metabolism, diet, tolerance, the product itself, and many other factors can influence the experience.

A Few Beginner "Don'ts"

Do not assume that more is automatically better.

Do not copy someone else's serving simply because it works for them.

Do not jump between several unfamiliar products at once. If you change everything simultaneously, it becomes difficult to understand what is actually working for you.

And be especially careful when comparing traditional kratom products with concentrated extracts. Always check the label so you understand the amount and concentration you are using.

If you take medications, have a medical condition, are pregnant or nursing, or have concerns about interactions or dependence, talk with a qualified healthcare professional before using kratom or other botanical products.

Give Yourself Time to Learn

Finding the right botanical product can involve a little experimentation.

You may discover that you prefer tablets over powder. You might find that one formulation fits your morning routine while another makes more sense later in the day.

And sometimes a product simply is not the right fit.

That is okay.

The goal should not be to chase the strongest product possible. The goal is to find a responsible, repeatable routine that works well for YOU.

ETHA Is Here to Help

We know kratom can be confusing when you are first getting started. That is one of the reasons education has always been such an important part of ETHA.

Our team can help explain the differences between products, how to read a COA, what different formats mean, and how to approach serving sizes responsibly.

And if you try an ETHA product and discover that it simply is not the right fit for you, talk to us. We would rather help you find a better option, including exchanging a product when appropriate, than leave you guessing.

Kratom does not have to be complicated.

Start with a company you trust.

Choose a product you understand.

Start small.

Pay attention to your experience.

And never be afraid to ask questions.

This is a pretty good place to begin.
